How to turn an ebook into audio

Drop an EPUB, PDF, TXT or Markdown file into the reader and Yaps finds its chapters. Pick a voice and language, choose a chapter, then press Read this chapter. The browser streams the first sentences while it makes the rest, so a book does not feel like a silent upload queue.

The audio is made with the same Supertonic 3 engine used by Yaps. It runs in your browser after a one-off model download, which means the file itself never has to travel to a conversion server. Each chapter can be replayed, scrubbed in the audio player or downloaded as a WAV.

EPUB to audio: the best format for chaptered reading

EPUB is reflowable and already carries a book's spine, table of contents and chapter boundaries. That gives the reader a clean list to work through and makes chapter-by-chapter audio practical. It is the format to use when you own an ebook and want to listen rather than stare at a screen.

PDFs work too, but their reading order depends on page layout. A text-based PDF with a normal single column usually narrates well. Magazine spreads, multi-column academic papers, footnotes and scanned pages may need a little cleanup or OCR before the words are ready for speech.

Listen to an ebook aloud without uploading it

The book is read from your local file in the browser. Nothing in the reader sends the EPUB or PDF to a processing endpoint. The speech model is the part that downloads; your book text stays in the tab and the finished WAV is created there too.

That makes this useful for a manuscript, a research paper, course reading or a book you do not want copied into an unknown online converter. You can verify the behaviour yourself by loading the voices once, disconnecting, and reading a chapter while offline.

The model download is roughly 145MB and browsers can clear their cache, so the first visit is the slowest. On a metered connection Yaps waits for you to approve that download rather than spending the data automatically.

Ebook text to speech with voices, speed and language choice

Choose from four voices and 31 languages before you read a chapter aloud. The language matters: it tells the model how to pronounce the spelling, while the voice changes the character of the narration. You can switch between chapters without parsing the book again.

Download ebook audio as a WAV file

When a chapter finishes, Download WAV saves a clean mono audio file named after the book and chapter. WAV is intentionally the first export: the browser can write it without sending your audio through a server or shipping a heavy encoder. Convert it to MP3 or M4B later if you need a smaller file or a packaged audiobook.

What ebook to audio cannot read yet

The reader works best with text-based EPUBs, PDFs and plain-text files. A scanned PDF is a collection of pictures, not selectable words, so it needs OCR first. DRM-protected books are intentionally not opened, and a complex layout can make the extracted reading order imperfect.

The safe rule is simple: if you can select the words in your PDF, it is a good candidate. If the book is made of images, has a lot of columns or contains unusual inline footnotes, check the chapter text before making audio and edit the source if necessary.
