Most voice typing tools assume a phone with a strong signal in a quiet room. Site work is close to the opposite of that on all three counts, and it is worth being specific about why.

The signal is gone exactly where the detail matters. Basements, plant rooms, tunnels, steel structures, and rural infrastructure are the places you most need to record a precise observation, and they are also the places where a phone drops to one bar or none at all. A cloud dictation tool that streams your audio to a server simply stops working there. A substation maintenance visit. No signal, restricted access, and a checklist your utility already runs on a tablet or paper form. You speak the transformer readings, the visual condition of the bushings, and a note about a fence panel that needs repair, and type it straight into the existing form field by voice instead of writing it by hand and transcribing it later.

A snagging walkthrough on handover. You are moving room to room with the site manager, calling out defects as you spot them: a scuffed door frame, a socket that is not level, a tap that drips. Each item goes into the snagging list your company already runs, spoken as you stand in the doorway looking at it, rather than reconstructed from a phone full of photos that night.

Be honest about the noise problem rather than pretending it does not exist. A generator running, an angle grinder two bays over, or wind across a rooftop is genuinely hard for any speech recognition, on device or off. No amount of local processing changes the fact that recognition needs to hear you over the noise, not just near it.

A few things actually help. Step a few metres away from the loudest source before you speak, even briefly, since noise falls off fast with distance. Hold the phone closer to your mouth than feels natural, six inches rather than arm's length. If you work in consistently loud plant rooms or on a loud site as a matter of routine, a phone headset with a boom microphone close to your mouth makes a bigger difference than any software setting. None of this is unique to Yaps. It is true of talking to anyone across a loud room, which is the honest comparison.

You do not need to remove a glove to hit it accurately, and once dictation starts you do not need to touch the phone again until you are finished speaking. Does this work with no signal at all?

Yes, once the one-time setup download is complete. Dictation, cleanup, and local search all run on the device, so a basement, a plant room, a rural site, or a steel structure that blocks a phone signal does not change how it performs. The only step that needs a connection is the initial download, which is best done on Wi-Fi before you leave for site.

What if the site is loud?

Loud sites are genuinely hard for any speech recognition, and no on-device processing changes that fact. Step a few metres from the loudest noise source before you speak if you can, hold the phone closer to your mouth than feels natural, and consider a headset with a boom microphone if you work in consistently loud environments. These are the same things that help you be understood by a person standing nearby.

Can I use it with gloves on?

The dictation button is a single tap, so you do not need fine motor control once recording has started. Thick winter or heavy-duty PPE gloves can be unreliable on any capacitive touchscreen, which is a hardware limitation rather than something software can fix. Many field users tap with a bare thumb or a knuckle and then hold the phone near their mouth to speak.

Does it understand technical vocabulary and part numbers?

It transcribes what you say, including technical terms, model numbers, and measurements, the same way it transcribes any other speech. Recognition accuracy for unusual part numbers and acronyms varies the way it would with any speech tool, and reading a number clearly and at a normal pace helps. It does not look up or validate part numbers against a catalogue.

Does it work with accents?

Yaps is built to handle a range of accents within each supported language rather than a single reference accent. As with any speech recognition, very heavy background noise combined with an unfamiliar accent is the harder combination, which is where the noise advice above matters most.

Can I dictate into the forms app my company already makes us use?

Yes. On mobile, Yaps is a keyboard rather than a separate app, so it works inside whatever app has the text field, including your company's mandated inspection app, a ticketing system, email, or a spreadsheet. You do not need to convince your employer to change software.

Does it attach or manage photos?

No. Yaps handles words, not images. If your workflow involves photographing a defect and writing a caption, you would still take the photo in your usual camera or forms app and could dictate the caption text with Yaps, but Yaps itself does not attach, store, or organise the photograph.

Is my data private on a client's site?

Speech recognition, text cleanup, and your local notes all run and stay on the device. Nothing is sent to a server as part of normal use, and note sync between your phone and a computer is optional and off unless you turn it on yourself. This is a property of how the software works, not a compliance certification, so follow whatever data handling rules your employer or client contract sets.

What does it cost?

There is a free guest mode on mobile that needs no account at all. Paid plans exist for people who want more, and pricing is shown in the app before you buy anything. We are not going to guess a number here, since it varies by platform and region and is best checked in app.

Does it replace our inspection or asset management software?

No, and it is not trying to. Yaps has no inspection templates, no asset register, and no scheduling. It is the layer that gets your spoken observation into the software you already use, faster and with more of the original detail intact.

Can it record a site meeting or toolbox talk?

Not on mobile. Recording and transcribing a meeting is a desktop feature on Mac and Windows, not something the phone app does. If you need to capture a site meeting, that is a desktop use case rather than a field one.

What languages does it support?

Dictation covers roughly 25 languages and detects which one you are speaking rather than making you choose from a menu, which is useful on a mixed-language crew. The keyboard itself types in more than 20 languages.

Do I need an account to try it?

No. Guest mode on mobile lets you use the keyboard, dictation, and local notes without creating an account or signing in.
