Text-based files work best. Scanned PDFs, DRM-protected books and complicated layouts may need OCR or a little cleanup before narration.
Sobre esta ferramenta
Read an ebook aloud with browser text to speech
Ebook text to speech is for the moment when you want the words read back to you rather than turned into a publishing project. Load an EPUB, PDF, TXT or Markdown file, select a chapter and listen while the text remains visible beside the controls. It is useful for a commute, a study session, accessibility support or proofreading a manuscript by ear.
The reader starts with a chapter instead of trying to synthesise a whole book in one operation. That keeps the page responsive, lets you stop between sections and makes it obvious which part of the book is being read.
Listen and proofread at the same time
Hearing a paragraph exposes repetitions, missing words and awkward sentences that are easy to skim past silently. The chapter preview stays on screen while the spoken text appears in the reader, so you can compare the audio with the source instead of trusting a black-box conversion.
This works especially well for essays, drafts, lecture notes and research papers. It is not a visual layout reader: PDF columns, footnotes and scans can still produce an imperfect order. Check a complex source before using it for serious proofreading or study.
Private read-aloud for EPUB, PDF and text files
The browser opens the local file and generates speech on your device. Nothing in the book is uploaded, so you can use the reader for unpublished writing, client material, medical notes or course reading without copying it into a cloud text-to-speech service.
The Supertonic voice model downloads once at roughly 145MB. After it is cached, chapter parsing and speech generation can continue offline. Your browser may clear that cache, but it never needs to send the book to make the voice speak.
Pick the reading voice and language
Choose from four voices and 31 languages before starting the chapter. The language selector affects pronunciation, while the voice changes the character of the read-aloud. You can move between chapters and generate another passage without selecting the file again.
For a short pasted passage, the separate text to speech tool is quicker. For a full ebook with chapter navigation and a visible source, this reader keeps the book's structure in view and lets you pause at natural boundaries.
What ebook read aloud cannot do yet
This first browser reader does not open DRM-protected Kindle books, perform OCR on scanned pages or remember a library across sessions. DRM-free EPUB is the strongest input because it carries a reliable reading order; text-based PDF is the next best choice.
If the page preview reveals columns or footnotes in the wrong order, use a cleaner source or extract the PDF to text and edit it first. That small review step is what keeps a private read-aloud useful instead of confidently reading a scrambled page.

Perguntas
What is the difference between ebook text to speech and ebook to audio?
Ebook text to speech focuses on listening to a chapter while the source remains visible. Ebook to audio focuses on making chapter WAV files you can keep. Both use the same local reader and voices.
Can it read EPUB books aloud?
Yes. EPUB is the strongest supported format because its spine already describes the chapter order. Upload a DRM-free EPUB and choose a chapter to start listening.
Can I use it for proofreading?
Yes. Hearing a draft often exposes repetition, missing words and awkward phrasing. Keep the chapter preview visible and review complex PDF layouts before relying on the reading order.
Does read aloud work with PDFs?
Yes, when the PDF contains selectable text. Scanned pages need OCR, and multi-column or footnote-heavy layouts may need cleanup.
Is the ebook sent to a text-to-speech server?
No. The file is parsed and spoken locally in your browser. Only the voice model may be downloaded on first use.
Which languages and voices are available?
The browser reader offers four voices and 31 languages. Set the language to match the book before starting a chapter.
Will it remember my reading position?
The current page keeps the selected chapter and audio in the tab. Persistent library state and cross-session progress belong in the Yaps desktop app.
