## 前言

Start with what this is not. Yaps has no lessons, no grammar explanations, no spaced repetition deck, no streak to protect, and no teacher on the other end. It does not correct your grammar and it does not score your pronunciation. If you came here looking for a course, this is not one.

What it is, is a practice tool. It gives you unlimited speaking repetitions and unlimited listening material, privately, on your own device, with no one listening in and no subscription clock ticking while you think of a word. That is a smaller claim than most language apps make, and it is the honest one.

The genuinely useful part is a feedback loop. You speak in the language you are learning, dictation turns it into text, and you look at what came out. A match is a small, real signal that you were understood. A mismatch is signal too, though an imperfect one, worth treating as a nudge to slow down and try again rather than a verdict on your accent.

Two features do almost all the work here. Dictation listens to you and writes down what it heard, auto-detecting the language rather than making you choose from a menu, which matters when you switch between your own language and the one you are practising mid-sentence. Read-aloud does the opposite job: paste in text and it reads it back to you, at a pace you choose, offline, as many times as you like.

Neither feature was built for language learners specifically. Both happen to be useful for it, a more modest claim than "AI language learning app," and worth saying plainly before you build a routine around them.

These are not exercises invented for this post. They are the ordinary ways people already use dictation and read-aloud, pointed at a language they are learning rather than their first one.

**The shadowing routine.** Take a short paragraph of text in your target language, thirty to sixty seconds' worth. Paste it into read-aloud and listen once at a normal pace with your eyes closed. Then play it again and speak along with it, matching the rhythm rather than translating in your head. Do this three or four times. Shadowing is an old technique from interpreter training, and read-aloud is a decent stand-in for a native speaker willing to repeat the same paragraph without getting tired of it.

**A daily spoken journal.** Every evening, open dictation and talk for two or three minutes in your target language about whatever happened that day. Do not plan it or translate from your own language first, just speak. When you are done, read the transcript back. You will see the words you reach for automatically and the ones you clearly avoided.

**Turning an article into listening material for a commute.** Find an article, a recipe, or a set of instructions in the language you are learning. Paste it into read-aloud, export the reading to an audio file, and put it on your phone. Listen on the walk to the station, with no screen open, the same way you would listen to a podcast. Audio export is a desktop capability, so build the file on a laptop and carry the audio with you.

**The self-test.** Pick ten phrases you are not confident about, the kind that trip you up in real conversation: ordering food, asking for directions, apologising for being late. Say each one into dictation and check what comes back. A clean match on the first try is a good sign. If it takes three attempts, that phrase needs more work, and now you know which one.

None of these routines replace a class or a conversation partner. They fill the hours between classes, which is where most practice time actually goes to waste.

Being honest about the split matters more than selling the tool. If you need to know why a verb takes the subjunctive, or you keep making the same grammar mistake, a course or a tutor fixes that faster than any amount of repetition on your own. Structure and correction are things a practice tool cannot give you, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

Where Yaps earns its place is in the hours a course does not cover. Most lessons are an hour a week, and most of the forgetting happens in the six days between them, when there is no teacher and often no motivation to open a textbook. That is the gap this fills: five minutes of speaking practice before bed, a passage read aloud on the way to work.

Most people who stick with a language end up doing both. The course supplies the structure. The practice supplies the repetition, and repetition is the part that quietly determines whether the structure sticks.

Mobile ships a smaller voice and language set than desktop, so if read-aloud in your target language is central to your routine, check that language is covered on the device you plan to use before you build a habit around it. Dictation is more consistent across platforms: roughly 25 languages, auto-detected, on both mobile and desktop. The mobile keyboard also types in 20 or more languages if you want to write rather than speak.

### Is Yaps a language learning app?

Not in the sense of a course. It has no lessons, no grammar explanations, no curriculum, and no levels. It is a practice tool: dictation lets you speak and see what came out, and read-aloud lets you listen to any text in the language you are learning.

### Does it correct my grammar?

No. Dictation transcribes what you say and cleans up filler words and punctuation, but it does not check whether your sentence is grammatically correct. If you say the wrong verb form, it writes down the wrong verb form, because that is what it heard.

### Does it score my pronunciation?

No. There is no pronunciation score or accent rating. What you get is whether the recognition understood the words you said, a rough and imperfect signal rather than a graded assessment. A mismatch is worth treating as a prompt to try the phrase again, not a verdict.

### Which languages does dictation support?

Roughly 25 languages, and Yaps detects automatically which one you are speaking rather than making you choose from a menu first. That auto-detection is useful for a learner narrating in one language and switching to the target language mid-thought.

### Which languages does read-aloud support?

Yes. Both dictation and read-aloud run on the device once set up, with no connection needed. You can practise on a train, on a flight, or anywhere else the signal drops, which is often exactly when there is time to practise.

### Is my speaking practice private?

Yes. Dictation and read-aloud both process on the device. Nothing you say or listen to is uploaded to a server, which matters if you are practising something personal, like a spoken journal.

### Is this good for a complete beginner?

It can help, mainly with listening and with getting comfortable hearing your own voice in a new language, but it will not teach the language from zero. A beginner still needs a course or a tutor to learn vocabulary and grammar in the first place.

### How is this different from a language app with AI conversation?

Chat-based language apps simulate a conversation partner that responds to what you say. Yaps does not. There is no dialogue and no AI tutor replying. It gives you a transcript of your own speech and a way to hear any text read aloud, a narrower, more mechanical set of tools.

### Can I turn an article into listening practice?

Yes. Paste the article into read-aloud and it reads the text back at a pace you set. On desktop, you can export that reading to an audio file and keep it, building a small library of listening material you take with you.

### Do I need an account to try this?

No. It has no concept of accent quality. What it reports is whether the words it heard matched what you meant, which correlates loosely with clear pronunciation but is not the same measurement.
