Before anything else, the limit that matters most. Most ebooks bought from Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo, or a major library app are protected by DRM, and no browser tool or desktop app can open a locked file and read it aloud. This guide will not explain how to remove that protection, and it will not point you anywhere that does.

This guide is for ebook files that are not locked: a public domain novel from Project Gutenberg, a manuscript you wrote yourself, a book from a DRM-free seller, or a technical manual, course notes, or a paper saved as a PDF. If a file opens in a plain text-based reader without a special app checking a license, it qualifies.

For those files, Yaps has a free tool built for exactly this: [Ebook to Audio](/tools/ebook-to-audio) reads EPUB, PDF, TXT, and Markdown files aloud in your browser. It runs on your machine, and your book is not uploaded anywhere.

If what you actually want is a way to turn any block of text, a saved article, a pasted draft, into audio rather than a whole book, our [text to audiobook guide](/blog/text-to-audiobook) covers that case. This post is specifically about ebooks: files with chapters, and enough length that how you split the reading matters.

## Как превратить электронную книгу в аудиокнигу

The tool works one chapter at a time on purpose.

Step 01

### Confirm the file is DRM-free 1 min

A plain EPUB, PDF, TXT, or Markdown file works. A book locked inside a store's own reader app does not, and this tool will not open it.

Step 02

### Drop the file into the tool 30 sec

The book is read in your browser and split into chapters. Nothing is sent to a server.

Step 03

### Pick a voice and language 1 min

Listen to a short sample before committing, since the voice you hear here is the one you will hear for the whole book.

Step 04

### Read one chapter varies

Select a chapter from the list and start reading. A longer chapter takes longer to generate, roughly in proportion to its length.

Step 05

### Download the chapter 10 sec

Save the finished chapter as a WAV file, then move on to the next one in the list.

Key Takeaway ¶

The free web tool is genuinely local, but it works one chapter at a time by design. For a full book with no length cap, the Yaps desktop app reads complete books and documents in the same private voices, with output exported to an audio file.

## Почему главы, а не один огромный файл

A full novel can run past eighty thousand words. Read aloud at a normal pace, that is many hours of audio, and generating it as a single file is a long job that produces one very large file with no natural place to stop.

Splitting by chapter solves two problems at once. A chapter is short enough to generate without a long wait, and it is a length you can actually navigate. Coming back tomorrow to "chapter fourteen" is simple. Coming back to "forty-three minutes into a six hour file" is not.

It also gives you a point to change your mind early. If chapter one sounds wrong, you find out after a few minutes rather than after committing to the whole book.

Scroll

| Approach | One file per chapter | One file for the whole book |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Time to first listen | Minutes | Can be hours |
| Resuming where you left off | Pick the chapter | Scrub through one long track |
| Catching a bad voice choice early | After one chapter | Only after the full run |
| File size per download | Manageable | Large, uncompressed WAV |

Be realistic about the file sizes either way. WAV is uncompressed audio, so even a single chapter can run to tens of megabytes, and a full book across all its chapters adds up to a large folder. That is a fair trade for a file that plays on essentially any device with no conversion, but it is worth knowing before you start.

## Выбор голоса и темпа, которые выдержат восемь часов

A voice you sample for thirty seconds and a voice you listen to for an entire book are not the same test. A slightly clipped consonant or a flat rhythm barely registers in one paragraph. Across eight hours it becomes the thing you notice.

Before committing to a full book, read at least one full chapter, not just an opening line, in the voice you are considering. A voice can sound fine on a short sentence and start to grate once it repeats certain patterns over hundreds of pages. Desktop offers 18 reading voices in total, and 8 of those run fully offline, the set worth starting from if the goal is a file that needs no connection to make.

Speed matters as much as voice. Long-form listening usually wants a slightly slower, steadier pace than a two-minute clip, since a brisk pace can feel rushed once your attention drifts during a commute or a chore. Set the pace once on a sample chapter and keep it consistent for the rest of the book.

> A synthetic voice is not a substitute for a narrator you love. It is a way to hear the books nobody was ever going to narrate for you: your own draft, a dense manual, a stack of papers due next week.

Say the honest thing plainly. If you are picking up a novel you are excited about, a professionally narrated audiobook is a better listening experience, and it is worth paying for one when it exists. A human narrator brings pacing, character voices, and judgment a synthetic voice does not attempt to match. The synthetic voice wins on availability, cost, and the enormous pile of DRM-free text that will never get a professional narration at all.

## Кому это действительно подходит

A strong fit

04

- Dyslexia or visual impairment hearing a book removes a barrier that reading text does not.
- Commuters a technical manual or a report is much easier to get through by ear on a drive or a train.
- Writers proofing their own manuscript hearing your own chapters out loud catches clunky sentences your eyes skim past.
- Students working through papers a dense paper read aloud once while you follow along sinks in differently than a second silent read.

Not the right tool

02

- A bestseller you want narrated well buy the professionally narrated audiobook. It is licensed, and it is simply a better listening experience.
- A scanned photo of a book Yaps has no OCR, so a scanned page is an image with no text underneath for the voice to read.

Notice the pattern in the strong-fit list. Each case involves a book, draft, or paper that either has no narrator at all, or where the value comes from the practicality of listening rather than the performance of the reading. That is the honest scope of this tool.

The scanned-book case is worth restating, because it catches people. A PDF that is really a stack of photographed pages has no selectable text underneath, so there is nothing for a read-aloud tool to read. Yaps does not include OCR, so a scanned ebook needs to be made searchable elsewhere first.

## Часто задаваемые вопросы

### Can I turn a book I bought from Amazon or another store into an audiobook?

Not with this tool, in almost every case. Ebooks from major stores are DRM-protected, licensed for you to read in that store's own app rather than opened by outside tools, and Yaps cannot open a locked file. This workflow is for DRM-free files: public domain books, your own manuscripts, books from DRM-free sellers, and documents like technical PDFs and papers.

### What file formats does the ebook to audio tool accept?

EPUB, PDF, TXT, and Markdown files. EPUB and PDF are handled as long as they contain real, selectable text rather than scanned images, and the tool splits chapters automatically where the file's structure supports it.

### Can it read a scanned PDF of a book?

No. Yaps does not include OCR, so a scanned image-only PDF has no text underneath for a voice to read, only pictures of pages. Run it through a separate OCR step to make the text selectable before this tool can do anything with it.

### Does the tool upload my book anywhere?

No. The tool runs in your browser, and the book is read on your own machine. Its own description is direct: it runs on your machine, and your book is not uploaded.

### How long does it take to generate an audiobook?

Roughly in proportion to how much text you are converting. A short chapter finishes in a few minutes. A very long chapter takes considerably longer, since generating speech is real, ongoing work rather than an instant conversion. Reading chapter by chapter keeps each wait manageable.

### Why does the tool work one chapter at a time instead of the whole book at once?

A full book is a long generation job that would produce one very large audio file with no easy way to skip around or resume partway through. Splitting by chapter keeps each piece quick to generate and easy to redo if you want to change the voice partway through.

### How big are the exported files?

The tool exports uncompressed WAV audio, which plays on nearly any device but takes up more space than MP3. A single chapter can run to tens of megabytes, and a full book across every chapter adds up to a large folder, so plan storage accordingly.

### Is a synthetic voice as good as a human audiobook narrator?

No, and it is worth saying plainly. For a novel you are excited about, a professionally narrated audiobook is a better listening experience, with pacing and character work a synthetic voice does not attempt. The synthetic voice earns its place on books that will never get a professional narration: your own manuscript, a technical manual, a stack of research papers.

### Can I listen to the converted audiobook on my phone?

Yes. Once a chapter is downloaded as a WAV file, copy it to your phone through your usual file transfer method, and it plays in any standard audio or file player, with no connection needed.

### What languages does the read-aloud voice support?

Desktop offline reading voices cover 31 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic. Match the voice to the language the ebook is written in for the most natural result.

### Does this cost anything?

The Ebook to Audio web tool is free, with no sign-up required. The Yaps desktop app, which reads complete books with no length cap and exports full audio, is a separate download with its own plan.

### Do I need an internet connection to use it?

You need a connection to load the tool once. After that, the reading happens on your own machine, so a chapter can be generated and played back with no ongoing connection.

### What about a very long or technical PDF, like a textbook or a research paper?

These are strong candidates, since technical documents rarely get a professional narration and DRM is rarely a factor for course notes or a paper you wrote or downloaded openly. Split a long PDF the same way you would a novel, by chapter or section.

### Can I convert an EPUB to MP3 directly?

The tool exports WAV rather than MP3. For a smaller compressed file, run the downloaded WAV chapter through a general audio converter afterward. Yaps' own [Ebook to MP3](/tools/ebook-to-mp3) and [Ebook Text to Speech](/tools/ebook-text-to-speech) pages point at the same underlying tool.
