## 서문

You are minutes from a call and you do not know if anyone can hear you. Here is the fastest way to find out, before any of the explanation below.

Open the free [microphone test](/tools/microphone-test) in your browser. It runs on the page itself, needs no account, and gives you a live waveform, a frequency view, and a plain quality readout in well under a minute. If the waveform moves while you talk and the readout comes back clear, you are ready to join the call.

If it does not, or if you already joined a call and someone said they could not hear you, the rest of this guide covers the real causes in the order they usually happen, and how to make a working microphone sound noticeably better once the basics are sorted.

## 30초 만에 마이크를 테스트하세요

Step 01

### Open the free tool 10 sec

Go to the microphone test in your browser. No download, no account, nothing installed.

Step 02

### Choose your input 10 sec

Pick the microphone from the list. The names often get clearer only after the browser has permission.

Step 03

### Speak a few sentences 10 sec

Allow the microphone prompt, then talk normally at the distance you would use on a call.

Step 04

### Read the readout 10 sec

The score, the level, the noise floor, and any clipping tell you whether the problem is the device, the room, or the level.

## 청취를 통한 문제 해결

Most microphone problems fall into one of four complaints, and each one points to a small, specific list of causes. Find the sentence that matches what actually happened on your call, then work through the section below it.

### Nobody can hear me

This is almost never a broken microphone. It is nearly always one of four things, roughly in order of how often each one happens.

**The wrong input is selected.** Laptops, webcams, and monitors often carry their own weak microphone, and your call app can default to one of those instead of the headset or external mic you meant to use. Open the audio settings inside the call itself, not just your operating system, and check which input is actually chosen.

**The browser or operating system has not granted microphone access.** A browser remembers a permission decision per site, so if you denied access once, or plugged in a new headset since, the call app may be stuck with no input at all. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Microphone, and confirm the browser or call app is switched on. On Windows, open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Microphone, and check that both "microphone access" and the specific app are allowed.

**Another app is holding the microphone.** Some software takes an exclusive lock on the audio input, so a recording app, a second call left open in another tab, or a voice assistant running in the background can quietly block everything else from reaching the mic. Close anything else that might be listening, then rejoin.

**Hardware mute.** Many headsets have a physical mute switch on the earcup or an inline button on the cable, separate from any software mute button in the call app. It is easy to bump by accident and easy to forget about, since it gives no on-screen warning at all.

Key Takeaway ¶

The single most common reason a microphone appears not to work is not a broken microphone. It is the wrong input selected in the call app, or a permission the browser is still sitting on from before you plugged in a headset.

### I sound quiet

If people can hear you but keep asking you to speak up, the cause is usually distance or level rather than the microphone itself.

**Distance is the biggest factor.** A microphone that sits eight inches from your mouth captures a much stronger signal than one across the desk, and the difference is larger than most gain settings can make up for. Moving closer almost always helps more than adjusting a slider.

**Input level or gain is set too low.** Most operating systems and call apps have an input volume or gain control, separate from the output volume you hear through your speakers. If it has been turned down, or an automatic gain feature has clamped it, your voice arrives weaker than it should.

**The built-in laptop microphone is doing the work.** Laptop microphones are designed to pick up a whole room adequately rather than a single voice well, so switching to a dedicated headset or external microphone is often the single biggest quality jump available.

The opposite problem is also common. If your voice sounds harsh, crackly, or breaks up on louder words, the input level is probably set too high rather than too low, and the signal is clipping. Lower the gain slightly and speak a touch further from the mic, then test again.

### I sound robotic or distant

This complaint points almost entirely at one cause: a Bluetooth headset that has dropped into its low-quality call mode.

Bluetooth headsets can operate in two different modes. One carries decent audio quality but no microphone signal back to the computer, so the call app falls back to a mode built for two-way voice instead, which uses far less bandwidth and sounds noticeably thinner and flatter. This switch usually happens automatically the moment your microphone is needed, with no message telling you it occurred.

There is not always a manual fix, since it depends on the headset and the operating system. Reconnect the headset, check whether your system offers separate profiles for music and calls, and if the drop stays consistent, a wired headset or USB microphone avoids the problem completely, since it has no call mode to fall into.

A wrong input selection can produce a similar effect. If the call app has switched to a webcam or monitor microphone instead of your headset, the sound often comes across as tinny and roomy, simply because that microphone sits much further from your mouth.

### There is an echo

Echo on a call usually comes from one of three places, and the fix is different for each.

**Two devices in the same room.** If you and someone else on the call are sitting near each other, each with your own microphone and speakers unmuted, the second person's audio gets picked up by your microphone and played back a moment later. The fix is for one person to mute their microphone and listen through the other person's speakers, or for one of you to use headphones.

**Sound bouncing off hard surfaces.** A room with bare walls, a hardwood floor, and no soft furniture reflects sound, and a sensitive microphone can pick up that reflection along with your voice. Curtains, a rug, or even sitting closer to a bookshelf reduces this noticeably.

**Speaker output feeding back into the microphone.** If you are speaking on the built-in speakers rather than headphones, some of that sound loops back into the mic and adds a faint delayed copy of the conversation. Headphones remove this entirely, since the microphone never hears your own speaker output.

Scroll

| App | Where to check your microphone |
| --- | --- |
| Zoom | Settings, then Audio, then choose your microphone from the input list. The Test Mic button plays back what it captured. |
| Microsoft Teams | Click your profile picture, then Settings, then Devices, and pick a microphone under Audio devices. |
| Google Meet | Use the gear icon or the three dots before or during a call to change the microphone. The exact menu position can vary by browser. |
| Discord | User Settings, then Voice & Video, then choose an input device. Discord also has its own input sensitivity slider, which can silently cut off quiet speech. |

Menus move as apps update, so if a path above does not match what you see, search the app's own settings for the word "microphone" or "audio" rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

Actually causes it

05

- The wrong input device selected in the call app instead of your headset or external mic.
- Blocked permission in the browser or operating system, often left over from before a device change.
- Another app holding the mic with an exclusive lock, such as a second call or a recording tool.
- A hardware mute switch on the earcup or an inline button on the cable.
- Bluetooth call mode dropping to a lower-quality two-way profile when the mic is needed.

Rarely the real problem

03

- A broken microphone hardware failure is uncommon compared with settings and permissions.
- Your internet connection a weak connection affects video and audio dropouts, not a silent mic.
- An old or slow computer capturing audio is light work even on modest hardware.

## 작동하는 마이크를 더 좋은 소리로 만들기

Once the mic actually works, a few habits make a bigger difference than buying new equipment.

**Move it closer.** Eight to twelve inches from your mouth is a reasonable target for most microphones. Every inch further away lets more room noise compete with your voice.

**Get off the built-in laptop microphone.** It is designed to capture a whole room reasonably rather than one voice well. A basic external microphone or a headset with a boom arm outperforms it in almost every case, at little cost.

**Treat the room, not just the microphone.** A rug, curtains, a couch, or a blanket hung on a bare wall absorbs the reflections that cause echo and a hollow, roomy sound. A small furnished room usually beats a large empty one.

**Avoid speaking directly into the mic head-on.** Pointing a microphone straight at your mouth catches the full force of hard consonants and breath, which causes the popping sound known as a plosive. Angling the mic slightly to one side, or placing it a little above or below your mouth, keeps the same closeness without that harshness.

A clean, well-placed microphone is not only useful for calls. Speech recognition can only work with the sound that reaches it, so a clearer signal generally means fewer corrections and less repeating yourself when you dictate. Yaps runs its speech recognition on your own device across Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, macOS, and Linux, so the habits that make a call sound better also make dictation more accurate.

## 자주 묻는 질문

### How can I test my microphone without calling anyone?

Use a browser-based microphone test rather than starting a real call. The [Yaps microphone test](/tools/microphone-test) shows a live waveform and frequency view the moment you speak, and reports a quality score afterward, all without dialing another person or opening a meeting app.

### How do I know if my microphone is actually working?

A working microphone should produce a moving waveform the instant you speak and go still the instant you stop. If the line stays flat no matter what you do, the input is muted, blocked, or the wrong device is selected. If it moves but only weakly, the signal is present but the level, distance, or room may need adjusting.

### Why can Zoom, Teams, or Meet not find my microphone?

This is almost always a permission or device selection issue rather than a hardware fault. Check that your browser or operating system has granted microphone access to that app, then open the app's own audio settings and confirm the correct input is chosen, since call apps do not always default to the device you expect.

### How do I grant microphone permission on a Mac?

Open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Microphone, and turn on access for your browser or call app. If you recently updated the app, the toggle can reset, so it is worth checking even if you allowed it before.

### How do I grant microphone permission on Windows?

Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Microphone, and confirm that microphone access is turned on generally and for the specific app you are using. Some organization-managed computers restrict this setting, in which case an administrator needs to enable it.

### Why does my Bluetooth headset sound bad on calls?

Bluetooth headsets often support a high-quality audio mode and a separate two-way voice mode, and the two-way mode carries far less audio detail. The moment your microphone is needed, many headsets switch into that lower-quality mode automatically, which is why voices can sound thin, flat, or distant on a call even though music plays back clearly through the same headset.

### Why do I sound quiet even though the waveform is moving?

A moving waveform proves the microphone is picking something up, not that the level is strong enough. Try moving closer to the microphone first, since distance affects level more than most gain settings can compensate for, then check the input gain in your operating system or call app if the problem continues.

### How do I fix an echo on a call?

Identify which of three causes applies. If someone nearby is on the same call with their own microphone unmuted, one of you should mute or switch to headphones. If the room is bare and reflective, add soft furnishings. If you are using speakers rather than headphones, switch to headphones so your own audio output does not loop back into your microphone.

### Does the Yaps microphone test upload my audio anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. The short recording it makes exists only so you can play it back to yourself, and it is never uploaded, sent to a transcription service, or stored by Yaps. Closing the page or resetting the test releases the local recording.

### Should I use an external microphone instead of my laptop's built-in one?

In most cases, yes. A laptop's built-in microphone is designed to pick up a whole room adequately rather than a single voice well. A basic external microphone or a headset placed closer to your mouth usually produces a clearer, more consistent signal without needing expensive equipment.

### Can I test a microphone on my phone?

Yes. Open the microphone test in your phone's browser and allow microphone access when prompted, the same waveform and quality readout appear. Phone browsers vary in how much device detail they expose, so the list of technical fields may be shorter than on a desktop browser.

### Why does my microphone list change after I run the test once?

Browsers often hide detailed device names until you grant microphone permission, showing a generic label instead. Once you allow access for the first test, the browser can reveal the real device name, so refreshing the input list afterward is expected rather than a fault.

### My microphone works in one app but not another, why?

Microphone permission and device selection are usually set separately per application, so granting access to one call app does not automatically grant it to another. Check the specific app's own settings and your operating system's privacy settings for that app individually.

### What if my microphone still is not working after all this?

Restart the call app and, if that does not help, restart the computer, since a locked audio driver occasionally needs a full restart to release. Also try the microphone in a different app entirely, such as the [microphone test](/tools/microphone-test) itself, to check whether the problem is the microphone or the specific call app you were using.
