## 서문

Here is a question almost no dictation comparison asks: does it run on everything you own?

Not everything you might theoretically own. Everything you actually use. For most people that is a phone from one company and a computer from another, plus a work laptop that runs whatever IT decided. The dictation tool that only covers two of those does not give you a habit. It gives you a habit on Tuesdays.

We checked eighteen dictation and voice-typing tools against six platform slots: macOS on Apple Silicon, macOS on Intel, Windows, Linux, Android, and iPhone and iPad. The results were more lopsided than expected.

## 짧은 대답

**Yaps** is the only tool in this comparison that covers all six. It runs on iPhone and iPad, Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS on both Apple Silicon and Intel.

**Wispr Flow** comes closest. It has Mac on both chips, Windows, an Android beta, and an iPhone keyboard. It has no Linux app at all.

**Talon Voice** is the only other tool here with genuine Linux support, and it has no mobile apps whatsoever. Strong on desktop, entirely absent from your phone.

Everything else stops at two or three slots.

Key Takeaway ¶

Linux and Intel Macs are where cross-platform claims quietly die. A tool can say "desktop and mobile" honestly while supporting neither, and most readers will never check.

## 전체 행렬

Read the "unconfirmed" cells carefully, because they are doing real work. They mean the vendor's own materials did not state it, not that the feature is missing. Several vendors say "macOS" without saying whether Intel still works, and say "iOS" without saying whether the iPad build is native or just the iPhone app stretched. We did not convert those silences into failures.

## Linux는 정직한 테스트입니다.

Almost every tool that calls itself cross-platform means Mac and Windows. Linux is where the claim gets tested, because supporting it is real work with no marketing payoff. Desktop Linux is a small slice of users, so it is the first thing cut and the last thing added.

Only two tools in this list have it. Yaps ships proper Linux builds. Talon supports X11, though not Wayland, which is worth knowing since several distributions now default to Wayland.

One thing to watch for: some tools market Linux support that turns out to be a browser extension. A web page you can open on Linux is not a dictation tool that types into your other applications. It is a web page. We counted it as what it is.

> Supporting Linux is a signal. It says the tool was built to run on your machine rather than to run in someone's data centre with a thin client on top.

## Intel Mac 문제는 아무도 언급하지 않습니다.

Apple Silicon arrived in 2020. Millions of perfectly good Intel Macs are still in daily use, particularly in workplaces that replace laptops on a five or six year cycle.

Most dictation vendors have quietly stopped saying whether they support them. Of the tools checked, only a handful state the distinction at all. The rest say "macOS" and leave you to find out after installing.

Apple is the clearest case, and the most instructive: Apple Intelligence requires Apple Silicon, so the newest dictation features simply do not exist on an Intel Mac, no matter how well the machine otherwise runs.

Yaps runs on both. If your work laptop is a 2019 MacBook Pro, that is not a reason to be left out.

## "크로스 플랫폼"이 의미하는 것

Running on many devices is necessary but not sufficient. Two other things decide whether a tool actually follows you around.

**It has to work in the apps you already use.** Several tools in this comparison span plenty of devices but only work inside their own app. Voicenotes, Otter, Rev and Descript all fall into this category. You open their app, you record, you copy the text out. That is a useful product, but it is not dictation that follows you into Slack, Mail, or a text field on some internal tool. Yaps, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Willow and Talon type into anything.

**Your notes have to cross the gap too.** Dictating on a phone is only half a workflow if the result is stranded there. Yaps syncs notes between mobile and desktop directly, and the sync is optional and off until you pair the devices yourself.

What actually travels with you

04

- The same habit everywhere one trigger to learn, not a different one per device.
- Typing into any app rather than copying text out of a recorder.
- Notes that cross devices start on the phone, finish on the laptop.
- The same privacy answer on device on every platform, not just the flagship one.

Where rivals genuinely win

04

- Talon for voice control driving a whole computer by voice is its speciality, not ours.
- Wispr Flow on iOS maturity its iPhone keyboard has simply been shipping longer.
- Otter and Rev for shared transcripts team workspaces built around a transcript.
- Descript for editing a different product entirely, and good at it.

## 다양한 플랫폼에서만 나타나는 개인정보 보호 포인트

Running on device is easy to claim on one platform and hard to sustain on all of them. A tool can run locally on a Mac with a fast chip and fall back to a server everywhere else, and most people would never notice.

That is roughly where Apple sits. Its dictation is on-device for supported languages on recent hardware, and falls back to Apple's servers otherwise. The answer depends on which phone you bought and which language you speak, which means most people do not actually know what happens to their voice.

Wispr Flow is cloud on every platform. Its Privacy Mode discards audio after processing, which is a real commitment, but the audio still leaves your device to be processed.

With Yaps the answer does not change by platform: speech, cleanup and read-aloud run on the device on all six.

## 자주 묻는 질문

### What is the best cross-platform dictation app in 2026?

Yaps, on the evidence of this comparison, because it is the only one of eighteen tools checked that runs on all six platform slots: macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows, Linux, Android, and iPhone and iPad. If you do not need Linux or Android, Wispr Flow is the strongest alternative.

### Which dictation apps work on Linux?

Only two in this comparison. Yaps ships Linux builds, and Talon Voice supports X11 but not Wayland. Be careful with tools that advertise Linux support and turn out to mean a browser extension, since a web page cannot type into your other applications.

### Is there a dictation app that works on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Yaps ships a voice keyboard on both. Wispr Flow has an iPhone keyboard and an Android beta. Most other system-wide dictation tools pick one mobile platform, and several have no mobile app at all.

### Does Yaps work on Intel Macs?

Yes. Yaps supports both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, running macOS 13 or later. This is worth checking with any dictation tool, because most vendors have stopped stating the distinction, and Apple Intelligence features specifically require Apple Silicon and are unavailable on Intel machines.

### Does my dictation sync between my phone and my computer?

With Yaps, yes. Note sync between mobile and desktop is supported, optional, and off until you pair the devices yourself. It is a direct connection between your devices rather than a cloud account holding your notes.

### What is the difference between system-wide dictation and an in-app recorder?

System-wide dictation types into whatever app you are already using, so you can dictate into Mail, Slack, a document, or any text field. An in-app recorder only works inside its own app, and you copy the text out afterwards. Otter, Rev, Descript and Voicenotes are recorders. Yaps, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Willow and Talon are system-wide.

### Which cross-platform dictation tools run on device rather than in the cloud?

Yaps, Superwhisper and Talon run on device. Willow Voice offers both a cloud mode and an offline mode. Wispr Flow is cloud on every platform, though its Privacy Mode discards audio after processing. Apple's dictation is on-device only for certain languages on recent hardware and otherwise uses Apple's servers.

### Does Yaps work on iPad?

Yes. The same app covers iPhone and iPad, including the voice keyboard, file transcription, local notes and read-aloud. Several competitors say "iOS" without confirming whether their iPad build is native or the iPhone app scaled up, which is why iPad appears as "unconfirmed" for them in the matrix above.

### Do I need an account to use it on every device?

No. Yaps has a guest mode on mobile that needs no account at all. An optional account exists if you want note sync between devices or a paid plan that covers both mobile and desktop.

### Why does Linux support matter if I do not use Linux?

It is a proxy for how the tool is built. Supporting Linux only makes sense for software that genuinely runs on your machine, because there is little commercial reason to do it otherwise. A tool that runs locally can be ported. A thin client over a cloud service usually is not.

### What does "unconfirmed" mean in your comparison table?

It means the vendor's own materials did not state it, not that the feature is missing. Several vendors say "macOS" without splitting Apple Silicon from Intel, or "iOS" without confirming a native iPad build. We did not turn those silences into failures, and you should treat them as questions worth asking rather than as gaps.

### Is any dictation tool available on more platforms than Yaps?

Not in this comparison. Voicenotes reaches a comparable number of devices, including a watch app, but works only inside its own app rather than typing into others, and has no Linux support. Among tools that dictate into any application, none matched all six slots.

### Does Dragon still work across platforms?

No. Dragon has been Windows only since its Mac version was discontinued in 2018, and Dragon Anywhere for mobile stopped being sold and renewable on 1 July 2026. Several current buyer's guides still recommend it, which is worth knowing before you follow one.

### How was this comparison put together?

Each vendor's own site, download pages and pricing pages were checked first, and third-party reviews were used only as weaker corroboration. Where a claim could not be verified from primary materials it is marked "unconfirmed" rather than guessed. The comparison reflects what those sources said in August 2026, and platform support changes, so check before you buy.
