## 서문

You have a forty-page report open and your eyes are done for the day. Reading it one more time will not help. You will skim, your brain will fill in the gaps, and you will miss the same things you missed the first two times.

There is a better move. Have the document read to you.

Listening is a different way to take in the same words, and it catches things reading misses: a dropped word, a clumsy sentence, a paragraph that does not quite hold together. It also frees your eyes. A long PDF can read itself out while you rest, tidy up, or walk the dog.

This guide shows you how to read a PDF aloud privately on Mac and Windows with Yaps, so the whole document stays on your machine. Nothing about it is uploaded. That matters when the PDF is a contract, a medical letter, a legal brief, or an unpublished draft you are not ready to hand to a cloud service.

## "PDF를 소리내어 읽기"의 실제 의미

A read-aloud tool turns written words into a spoken voice. You select some text, and instead of reading it with your eyes, you hear it. That is text-to-speech, and it is the same technology behind the voice that reads directions in your car or the screen reader that helps people who cannot see the page.

There is one honest requirement, and it decides which PDFs work. The tool needs real, selectable text.

Most PDFs have it. If you exported the document from Word, Google Docs, a web page, or almost any writing app, the words underneath are true text. You can click into the file and drag to highlight a sentence. Any read-aloud tool can speak that text.

A scanned PDF is different. When someone photographs a page or runs a paper document through a scanner, the result is a picture of words, not words a computer can read. Nothing highlights when you try to select it. Before any tool can read that file aloud, the page has to be made searchable through OCR, which stands for optical character recognition. OCR looks at the image and works out what letters are there, turning the picture back into text. Preview on Mac and Acrobat on Windows can both do this. Once the PDF has real text in it, the steps below work the same way.

**So which do you have?** Open the PDF and try to highlight a line. If a blue selection appears over the words, you are ready. If the whole page selects as one block or nothing happens, it is a scan and needs OCR first.

Re-reading on screen

### Your eyes autocorrect the page

By the third pass your brain predicts what comes next and glides over the rough spots. You skim, you tire, and the errors that survive are the ones you can no longer see. A long document is a slog you have to sit still for.

Listening with Yaps

### Your ears hear what is really there

A voice reads exactly what is on the page, with no filling-in. A missing word makes the sentence stumble. You can listen with your eyes shut, on a walk, or while the coffee brews, and the words never leave your device.

## 몇 단계만으로 Yaps를 사용하여 PDF를 소리내어 읽는 방법

The setup takes about two minutes once. After that, hearing any document is a single keypress.

### 1. Download Yaps and start the trial

Get [Yaps](/features/text-to-speech) for Mac or Windows, open it, and start the 7-day free trial. Starting that trial needs an account, and signing in does not change where the reading happens: the text is spoken on your own machine and nothing is uploaded. Yaps is a small, fast app: it starts in under a second, so it does not get in your way when you just want a document read.

### 2. Choose your voice

Open Yaps settings and pick a reading voice. There are 18 voices on desktop. Eight of them run fully offline, meaning they read your document with the internet switched off and nothing sent anywhere. The other ten are cloud voices for when you want a different sound and are online.

For private reading, choose one of the offline voices. That is the whole point of this guide: the document and the voice both live on your machine.

### 3. Open the PDF and select the text

Open the PDF in any viewer you like. Preview on Mac, or Edge, Acrobat, or a browser on Windows. Yaps reads whatever text you select in any app, so you do not need a special PDF player or a separate reader window.

Drag to highlight the passage you want to hear. To grab the whole page or document, use Command+A on Mac or Ctrl+A on Windows. If nothing highlights, the file is a scan and needs OCR first, as described above.

### 4. Press the read-aloud hotkey

With the text selected, press the Yaps hotkey for read-aloud. On macOS that is Option and Fn; Windows and Linux each have their own default, and every shortcut can be rebound. Yaps reads your selection aloud in the voice you chose, and the words never leave the device.

Press it again to stop. Because Yaps works across every app on the system, the same keypress reads a selection in your browser, your email, or a note, not only in a PDF.

![A pair of over-ear headphones resting on an open printed document beside a laptop glowing softly with warm ember light, on a cream surface, suggesting a document being read aloud privately](/images/blog/read-pdf-aloud-privately-1.jpg)

### 5. Read a long PDF hands-free

For a full report rather than a paragraph, copy the text into a Yaps note and start read-aloud from there. Yaps reads the whole note straight through, so you can set it going and close your eyes, wash up, or take a walk while the document reads itself.

If you would rather open the file directly, the free ebook text-to-speech reader accepts a text-based PDF in your browser and gives you chapter, voice, and playback controls without uploading the document. For a PDF whose reading order needs editing first, extract its text locally, tidy the result, and then read that version aloud.

This is also the tidiest way to proofread. Hearing a draft read back plainly, with no emphasis added, surfaces the awkward sentences your eyes forgive. We wrote a whole guide on [proofreading by ear with text-to-speech](/blog/text-to-speech-proofreading) if that is why you are here.

Pro Tip P

Before you copy a long PDF into a note, glance at the page for stray headers, page numbers, and footnotes. Those land mid-sentence and make the voice stumble. Deleting them from the note first gives you a clean, uninterrupted read.

## Yaps 대 기본 제공 및 클라우드 옵션

Your computer already ships with a way to read text aloud, and the web is full of cloud readers. They each have a place. Here is how they compare for reading a PDF privately.

On a Mac, Preview can read a selection aloud, and VoiceOver, the built-in screen reader, can read almost anything. On Windows, Narrator does the same job, and Edge has a Read Aloud button that works well on PDFs opened in the browser. These are free, already installed, and fine for a quick listen. The voices have improved a lot, though many people still find them a little flat over a long document, and setting them up for a specific selection can be fiddly.

Cloud readers go the other way. They tend to have the most lifelike voices and the widest choice of languages. The trade is the one this whole guide is about: to read your PDF, they send its text to a server. For a public article that is nothing to worry about. For a contract, a patient letter, or an early draft, you are handing the contents to a company you have to trust.

Yaps sits in the middle in the best way. The voices are natural, the reading happens on your device, and nothing about the document is uploaded when you use an offline voice.

Scroll

| What matters | Yaps | Built-in (Mac / Windows) | Cloud readers |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reads on-device | Yes, offline voices | Yes | No (sends text to a server) |
| Document stays private | Yes | Yes | Uploaded to read |
| Natural reading voices | 18 to choose from | A few, often flat | Many, very lifelike |
| Reads a selection in any app | Yes, one hotkey | Partly, varies by app | Usually paste into a page |
| Works with no internet | Yes | Yes | No |
| Reads many languages aloud | 31 languages, offline | Several languages | Wide, but uploaded |

**Where does Yaps not win?** Sheer voice variety. Cloud readers offer more voices and more accents per language, and if you want to audition a dozen lifelike narrators for a public document, that is a fair reason to use one. What Yaps gives you instead is the combination almost nothing else does: read-aloud in 31 languages that runs entirely on your own machine, so a contract or an early draft is never uploaded to be spoken.

> A public article can go to any reader you like. A contract, a medical letter, or an early draft should be read by a voice that never phones home.

## 이것이 실제로 누구에게 도움이 되는지

Reading a PDF aloud is not one use case. It is several, and they overlap.

Anyone editing their own writing gets sharper by ear. A voice reads back exactly what you typed, so the missing word, the repeated phrase, and the sentence that runs on all announce themselves. This is the classic writer's trick, made practical because you no longer have to perform it with your own tired voice.

Students and researchers can turn a stack of dense papers into something to listen to on the walk to class. Reading a long PDF twice is tedious. Hearing it once while your hands are busy is a second pass you would not otherwise make.

People who read all day for work, such as lawyers reviewing filings or clinicians working through letters, get to rest their eyes without losing the document. Because the reading stays on the device, a sensitive file never becomes a cloud upload just so you can listen to it.

And anyone who finds long reading tiring, for any reason, gets a calmer way in. Listening is simply a different door into the same words. If offline is the theme running through all of this, we keep a wider list of [private tools that run on your own device](/blog/best-offline-ai-apps-2026), of which read-aloud is one.

## 짧은 버전

To read a PDF aloud privately, download Yaps, pick an offline voice, select the text in your PDF, and press the read-aloud hotkey. The document is read to you in a natural voice, and none of it leaves your machine.

Start with Yaps when the file is yours to keep private. Reach for a cloud reader instead only when the PDF is public and you need a language outside the 31, or when you specifically want the widest possible choice of voices and accents. For the everyday job of hearing your own reports, drafts, and documents without handing them to anyone, a private on-device reader is the right default.

## 자주 묻는 질문

### How do I make my Mac read a PDF aloud?

Download Yaps for Mac, open the PDF in Preview or any viewer, select the text, and press Option and Fn to have Yaps read it aloud in a natural voice. Because Yaps reads the selection on your device, the document is never uploaded. Your Mac also has built-in options: Preview can speak a selection, and VoiceOver can read almost anything, though many people find those voices flatter over a long read.

### How do I get Windows to read a PDF out loud?

Download Yaps for Windows, open the PDF, highlight the text you want, and press the Yaps read-aloud hotkey to hear it in one of 18 voices. Windows also includes Narrator, and Microsoft Edge has a Read Aloud button that works on PDFs opened in the browser. The difference is privacy: with an offline Yaps voice, nothing about the document leaves your PC.

### Can I read a PDF aloud without uploading it to the cloud?

Yes. Yaps reads your selected text with an on-device voice, so the words are spoken from your own machine and nothing is sent to a server. Eight of the 18 desktop voices run fully offline, which means you can read a private PDF with the internet switched off entirely. Most cloud readers, by contrast, have to upload the text before they can speak it.

### What is the best app to read a PDF aloud privately?

Yaps is the strongest choice when the document is sensitive, because it reads the text on your device and uploads nothing. Select the text in any PDF and press the read-aloud hotkey, and it reads in any of 31 languages without a connection. If your document is public and you want to audition a lot of lifelike narrator voices, a cloud reader offers more variety.

### How do I read a scanned PDF aloud?

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so it has no text to read until you run OCR on it first. OCR, short for optical character recognition, turns the image back into real, selectable words, and both Preview on Mac and Acrobat on Windows can do it. Once the file has real text, open it, select the passage, and press the Yaps read-aloud hotkey to hear it like any other PDF.

### Does Yaps read PDFs aloud offline?

Yes. Offline read-aloud runs entirely on your Mac, Windows, or Linux machine, so you can read a document with no internet connection and no data leaving the device, in any of the 31 supported languages. Optional cloud voices exist for when you are online and want a different sound.

### How many voices does Yaps have for reading aloud?

There are 18 voices on desktop, 8 of which run fully offline, and the rest are cloud voices for when you are online and want a different sound. Read-aloud on desktop also covers 31 languages, all of it spoken on your own machine. Mobile ships a smaller set.

### Can Yaps read a PDF aloud in another language?

Yes. Read-aloud covers 31 languages on desktop, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi and Vietnamese, and it all runs on your own machine. Select the passage and press the read-aloud hotkey. One honest caveat: a sentence that switches language mid-way is the hard case for any reader, and unusual proper nouns are where every reader is weakest.

### Is there a free way to read a PDF aloud?

The read-aloud tools already built into your computer, such as Preview and VoiceOver on Mac or Narrator and Edge on Windows, are free and can read a PDF, though the voices are often plainer. Yaps itself is a paid app with a 7-day free trial, then Pro at $15 a month or Max at $25 a month. The trial lets you test the natural offline voices on your own documents before you decide.

### What is the keyboard shortcut to read text aloud in Yaps?

Select the text, then press Option and Fn on macOS, Shift and the Windows key on Windows, or double-tap Alt on Linux to start read-aloud, and press it again to stop. All of those defaults can be rebound in settings. Because Yaps works across every app, the same shortcut reads a selection in a PDF, a browser page, an email, or a note. On Android, you select the text and choose "Read aloud with Yaps" instead.

### Can I read a PDF aloud on my phone?

On Android, you can select text and choose "Read aloud with Yaps" to hear it in one of the two mobile voices, Heart and Adam. For a PDF, get the text into a note or a text field first, then read it aloud from there. An iPhone and iPad version of Yaps is coming soon.

### Does reading a PDF aloud work while I do other things?

Yes. Copy a long PDF into a Yaps note, start read-aloud, and the whole note plays straight through while you close your eyes, cook, or go for a walk. This hands-free pass is also the easiest way to catch mistakes in your own writing, because hearing a draft read back plainly surfaces the awkward lines your eyes skim over.
