## 서문

You have been learning for eight months. You can tap the correct answer, recognise the words on a flashcard, and follow a lesson written for you at exactly your level. Then a native speaker says one ordinary sentence at ordinary speed and the whole thing collapses.

That is not a motivation problem. It is a loop problem. Learning stalls where the practice stops matching what the language actually does: real text at real speed, and your own mouth producing sounds that somebody else has to understand.

A practice loop needs three parts. You need to hear real text, not lesson text. You need to say things and find out what came out. And you need to check meaning quickly, without breaking the flow to open a browser tab. All three can run on your own machine, which matters more than it sounds, because the sentences you practise with are often personal.

Course apps are good at the beginning and they deserve credit for it. They give you a sequence, a daily habit, and no decisions to make about what to study next.

What they cannot do is give you enough contact with the language as it is actually used. A lesson sentence is written to be understood by you. A newspaper sentence, a song lyric, a recipe, a comment under a video, a menu: none of those were written with you in mind, and that is exactly what makes them useful.

**So what is missing?** Production and exposure. You need to say sentences nobody prompted, and you need to meet text nobody simplified. The gap between recognising a word and producing it is the whole distance you are trying to cross.

Read-aloud, also called text to speech, turns written words into a voice. You select a paragraph anywhere on your screen and hear it instead of reading it silently.

For a learner this changes what counts as study material. An article you found, a chapter of a novel, a set of song lyrics, a page of instructions, a message from a friend: all of it becomes listening practice, and none of it had to be written for a learner.

On desktop, Yaps reads text aloud in 31 languages, entirely on your own machine. Mobile ships a smaller set of voices, so if you intend to do this seriously, do it on a laptop.

Three details make it useful for practice rather than just convenient.

**The words highlight as it reads.** This is the part that most people do not expect and end up using constantly. As Yaps reads, the text lights up word by word, so your eyes stay locked to the sound. Where word-level timing is not available it falls back to highlighting sentence by sentence, which is still enough to keep your place. For a learner this quietly solves the hardest problem in listening practice: knowing which written word made which sound. Fast speech in a new language sounds like one continuous noise until something shows you where the joins are.

**You can slow it down.** Reading speed is adjustable, with presets at 0.75x, 1.0x, 1.25x, 1.5x and 2.0x. Run a paragraph at 1.0x first so you meet it at something like a natural pace, then drop to 0.75x for the one sentence that keeps sliding past you. Later, when the same paragraph has become easy, push to 1.25x, which is a fast and honest test of whether you really have it.

**You can keep the audio.** A reading can be saved as an audio file, in WAV format. That turns any text into something you own: a chapter for a walk, a set of phrases for the bus, a paragraph you play four times while cooking. No app, no connection, no streaming. Listening to the same short passage many times is one of the oldest and most effective things a learner can do, and saved audio makes it trivial. Here is the uncomfortable half. You can hear your target language for months and still have no idea what you sound like in it, because the voice you hear in your own head is the one you meant to make.

Dictation gives you a blunt mirror. You speak, and the words you produced appear as text. If you meant one word and a different one appeared, something in what you said did not land. That is not a score and it is not a grade. It is evidence, and evidence is what practice has been missing.

Yaps dictation understands about 25 languages and detects them automatically from your speech, so you do not have to pick a language from a menu before you start. That matters for a learner who moves between two languages in one sitting, jotting a note in English and then practising a sentence in Portuguese. See [dictation](/features/dictation).

**Be precise about what this is.** Yaps does not assess your pronunciation. It does not give you a percentage, tell you which vowel was wrong, or track whether you improved this week. It writes down what it heard. The judgement is yours, and it is more useful than it sounds: a sentence that comes out clean three times in a row is a sentence you can probably be understood saying.

Two habits make this work.

**Say it after you hear it.** Have a sentence read aloud, then say the same sentence yourself and dictate it. Compare the two texts. Where they diverge is where your mouth and your ear disagree.

**Say something nobody gave you.** Once a day, describe your afternoon out loud in your target language and dictate it. It will be full of holes. The holes are the point, because every place you stopped and reached for a word is a real vocabulary item, chosen by your own life rather than by a syllabus.

The third part is the one that breaks concentration most often. You hit a word you do not know, open a browser, get distracted, and the session is over.

Nothing you are reading or practising leaves the device, which is worth thinking about if your practice text is a message from your partner, a work document, or a letter from a relative.

**Read this part carefully, because the packs are not what people assume.**

There are two of them, and they are different sets of languages rather than one inside the other.

The Standard pack covers 28 languages. It is the smaller download, it is the one Yaps recommends by default, and it is the only pack that includes Khmer, Lao, Malay and Burmese.

The Extended pack covers 53 languages. It adds wider European and Indian coverage, plus regional variants of Portuguese and Chinese. It does not include Khmer, Lao, Malay or Burmese.

So the bigger number is not automatically the right choice. If you are learning Malay, the Extended pack is the wrong download, and installing it first is a genuinely easy mistake to make. Pro Tip P

Use the same passage for four days running rather than a new one each day. On day one you will probably need 0.75x, and by the end of the week 1.25x often starts to feel comfortable, which is about the clearest progress signal you will get without a teacher.

Most vocabulary is not forgotten. It is never captured. You meet a good phrase on a Tuesday, think you will remember it, and by Thursday you have lost even the memory of having met it.

Voice notes fix the capture problem because speaking a phrase takes four seconds. Say it in your target language, say what it means, and it is saved. The notes live in a searchable vault on your device, and they can be plain text, a checklist, or a board of cards, whichever suits how you revise. They export to Markdown and plain text, so nothing is trapped.

The recall half is where it starts to feel different from a notebook. You can ask questions across your own notes, and the answer is produced on your device, offline. That means you can ask what you have written down about the subjunctive, or which phrases you collected while travelling, without remembering the exact words you used at the time. Five limits, so nothing here disappoints you in week three.

**It is not a course, a curriculum, or a tutor.** Yaps does not teach you, sequence anything, explain a grammar rule, or track your progress. If you need structure, use a real course such as Duolingo, Babbel, or Assimil, and if you need correction and conversation, book hours with a human on a tutoring platform such as italki or Preply. Nothing beats a person who tells you that your sentence was technically correct and nobody says it that way.

**It does not score your pronunciation.** Dictation shows you the text that came out of what you said. That is evidence, not assessment. It cannot tell you that your vowel was slightly too open, and it will not give you a number.

**It does not correct your grammar.** Text cleanup removes filler words and false starts, fixes punctuation and capitalisation, and formats lists. It tidies what you said. It does not fix a wrong verb ending, and you should not read a clean-looking transcript as a sign that your sentence was correct.

**Proper nouns and mixed sentences are the hard cases.** Names of people, places, and brands are where any read-aloud system is most likely to produce something a native speaker would wince at, so do not learn a place name from a synthetic voice alone. A sentence that switches language halfway through is the other hard case, for both reading aloud and dictation, because the system has to commit to one language.

**There is no iPhone or iPad app yet.** Yaps runs on Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux today, and iOS is coming soon. The full loop described here is a desktop workflow anyway, because desktop is where the 31 read-aloud languages live.

The loop in this article lives on desktop. For everything between the lessons, which is most of your learning time, make Yaps the default. The reason to do all of that on your own device is not ideology. It is that the sentences worth practising are usually the personal ones, and a beginner speaks badly on the way to speaking well. That stage deserves to stay private.
