Claude desktop: the best for reasoning and long documents The native Mac app is the one to reach for when the job is thinking rather than typing: working through a long document, drafting something structured, or reasoning about a problem where you want the answer to actually hold up. It handles long inputs well, which matters if you paste in a contract or a research paper rather than a paragraph. The desktop app adds a keyboard shortcut to summon it, which makes a real difference to whether you use it. **Where it stops.** It is a cloud service. What you paste goes to a server, which is the entire transaction and unavoidable, but worth knowing when the document is confidential. And breadth cuts both ways: it is decent at many things and best at few. ### 4. Raycast AI: the best if you live in a launcher Raycast replaces Spotlight, and its AI is built into that. You hit a shortcut, ask a question or run a text transform, and carry on. No app to switch to. For quick jobs, that removal of friction beats a better model in a separate window. Rewriting a sentence, explaining an error message, converting a format. **Where it stops.** Answers go to a cloud model. The AI features sit behind the paid tier. And it is quick-hit by design, not where you do long work. ### 5. Obsidian: the best local notes foundation Obsidian keeps plain Markdown files in a folder on your Mac. It is at its best on multi-file changes and refactors where the model needs to see how a codebase fits together. **Where it stops.** Cloud models, so your code is sent to be reasoned about, which some employers prohibit.
