# Nejlepší offline překladatelská aplikace pro soukromé dokumenty v roce 2026

Každý bezplatný překladač online je formulář, který vyplníte informacemi, které nemusíte vlastnit. U smlouvy, lékařského dopisu nebo nevydaného scénáře je to rozhodnutí, které stojí za to učinit záměrně, nikoli ze zvyku. Toto je to, co offline překlad skutečně dělá, a kde stále nedostačuje.

## Předmluva

Paste a paragraph into a free web translator and you have made a decision, whether or not you noticed making it. That text is now on somebody else's computer.

For a restaurant menu, nobody cares. For a client contract, an unreleased script, a medical letter, or a witness statement, it is a different matter entirely. The text was probably not yours to upload.

Offline translation solves that by doing the work on your own machine. This guide covers what that actually means, what it is genuinely good at, and the cases where you should still use a cloud service instead.

## Co by vlastně měla znamenat „offline překlad“

The phrase gets used loosely, so it is worth pinning down. A genuinely offline translator has three properties.

**The text never leaves your machine.** Not "encrypted in transit", not "deleted after 30 days", not "we do not train on your data". Those are policies, and policies change with a funding round. Offline means there is nothing to change the policy about.

**It keeps working with no connection.** On a plane, in a secure facility, on a train through a tunnel, or on a site with no signal. If it stops working when the wifi drops, it was never local.

**It does not meter you.** Cloud translation is billed per character, which quietly shapes behaviour. You start translating the important paragraph rather than the whole document, because the whole document costs money.

Key Takeaway ¶

Most tools marketed as "private translation" are cloud services with a good privacy policy. That is a meaningfully weaker promise than software that has no server to send anything to, and the difference only shows up on the day the policy changes.

## Upřímný kompromis

Local translation is not free of cost. It buys privacy and pays for it in three currencies, and you should know the exchange rate before committing.

**Quality.** The largest cloud translation systems are very good, and on hard material, idiom, humour, poetry, legal nuance, they are usually better than what runs on a laptop. For gist and for working drafts, local output is more than adequate. For a contract that will be signed in another language, you want a professional human translator regardless of which machine produced the first pass.

**Setup.** You download a language pack once per language pair. It is a real download and it takes a moment. After that it is instant and free forever, but the first run is not.

**Language coverage.** A cloud service offers a very long list. A local system offers the pairs it has packs for. Check that your pair is supported before you build a workflow on it.

> The right question is not which translator is best. It is which translator you are allowed to paste this particular document into.

## Kde Yaps sedí

Yaps translates on your own computer: a note, a selected paragraph, or a file. It runs in the desktop app on **macOS, Windows and Linux**. It is not part of the mobile app.

Being precise about the file types, because this is where vague marketing does real damage: Yaps translates **Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt) and SRT subtitle files (.srt)**. It does not accept a Word document, a PDF, a spreadsheet or a slide deck directly. If your source is a PDF, you convert it to text first and translate that.

You download a language pack once for the pair you need, and from then on it works with no connection, no API key, and no cost per word.

Step 01

### Get your text into a supported format 1 min

A note in Yaps already works. Otherwise save your source as .md, .txt or .srt. A PDF needs converting to text first.

Step 02

### Download the language pack once one-off

Pick your language pair. Some pairs need an additional model downloaded before they are available. This step needs a connection; nothing after it does.

Step 03

### Translate and review seconds

Translate the note, the selection, or the file. A subtitle file comes back as a translated sibling file with its timing structure intact.

## Tři pracovní postupy, které se skutečně objeví

**A private note or draft.** You wrote something in one language and need it in another, and it is not material you would paste into a web form. Client notes, interview transcripts, internal documents, early drafts. This is the everyday case.

**A subtitle file.** Translating an SRT is its own problem, because a general translator treats the timecodes as text and mangles the file. A subtitle-aware translation keeps the numbering and timing intact and translates only the dialogue. We covered that specific job in the [guide to translating SRT files](/blog/translate-srt-subtitles), and it pairs with [generating the subtitles in the first place](/blog/video-captions-subtitles).

**Markdown you are keeping.** Documentation, notes, a knowledge base. Markdown survives translation better than a word processor file because the formatting is plain characters rather than hidden structure that a translator can break.

Reach for the cloud when

### Coverage or polish is the point

An unusual language pair, marketing copy where phrasing carries the value, idiom-heavy dialogue, or anything being published in your name in a language you cannot read. The best cloud systems are genuinely better on hard material, and the text is not confidential.

Keep it local when

### The text is not yours to upload

Client material, anything under NDA, medical or legal documents, unreleased work, or personal correspondence. Also when you have no connection, or when the document is long enough that per-character billing changes what you are willing to translate.

## Kontrola výstupu, kterou většina návodů přeskočí

Machine translation fails in specific, predictable ways. Five minutes of checking catches nearly all of it.

**Proper nouns.** Names of people, companies and products get "translated" when they should be left alone. This is the single most common embarrassing error.

**Numbers and units.** Decimal separators differ between languages, and a comma becoming a full stop changes a figure by a factor of a thousand. Check every number in anything financial or clinical.

**Length.** Translated text is often longer than the source. German and Spanish routinely run longer than English. That matters for anything with a fixed space: a button, a table cell, a subtitle line.

**Formality.** Many languages distinguish formal and informal address in a way English does not. A machine picks one. Whether it picked correctly for a client letter is a judgement only you can make.

**The reverse read.** For anything that matters, have someone who reads the target language look at it. Machine translation is a first draft, not a deliverable.

Local translation handles well

05

- Understanding a document gist, meaning, and what a page is actually about.
- Confidential material where uploading is the thing you are trying to avoid.
- Long documents where per-character billing would otherwise decide what you translate.
- Subtitle files where the structure has to survive, not just the words.
- Working with no connection once the language pack is downloaded.

Where it is not the answer

05

- Word, PDF or slides not accepted directly; convert to text first.
- Mobile translation is a desktop feature and is not in the phone app.
- Live conversation this translates text, not a two-way spoken exchange.
- Certified translation legal and official documents need a qualified human translator.
- Unsupported language pairs check yours is available before building a workflow on it.

## Poznámka o regulované práci

If you handle client data under a professional duty, legal, medical, financial, social work, then pasting that text into a consumer web translator is a data transfer, and quite possibly one you are not permitted to make. It rarely feels like one, because the interface is a text box.

Local translation removes the question rather than answering it. There is no transfer to disclose, no processor to add to a register, and no retention period to check. That is a materially simpler position to be in than having read a privacy policy carefully.

This is not legal advice, and your own obligations may be stricter. But "the text never left the machine" is an easier sentence to defend than any explanation involving a third party.

## Často kladené otázky

### What is the best offline translation app?

For private documents on a computer, the useful criteria are that the text stays on your machine, it keeps working with no connection, and it handles the file types you actually have. Yaps translates notes, selected text, Markdown, plain text and SRT subtitle files locally on macOS, Windows and Linux. For unusual language pairs or published marketing copy, a large cloud service will generally produce better output, and that text is usually not confidential anyway.

### Does offline translation work without any internet at all?

Yes, once the language pack is downloaded. That first download needs a connection. After it completes, translation runs entirely on your machine, including on a plane, in a secure facility, or anywhere with no signal.

### Which file types can Yaps translate?

Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt) and SRT subtitle files (.srt), plus notes and selected passages inside the app. Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets and slide decks are not accepted directly. If your source is a PDF, convert it to text first and translate that.

### Is offline translation as accurate as Google Translate or DeepL?

Not usually on hard material. Large cloud systems have an advantage on idiom, humour, and unusual language pairs. For understanding a document, working drafts, and everyday professional text, local translation is generally more than good enough. The trade you are making is some quality on difficult passages in exchange for the text never leaving your computer.

### Can I translate a PDF offline?

Not directly. Convert the PDF to text first, then translate the text. Yaps has free PDF conversion tools on the site for that step. Be aware that converting a PDF loses layout, so you get the words rather than a formatted replica.

### Does Yaps translation work on iPhone or Android?

No. Translation is a desktop feature, available in the Yaps app for macOS, Windows and Linux. It is not in the mobile app.

### How do I translate subtitles without breaking the timing?

Use a tool that understands the subtitle format rather than a general text translator, which treats the timecodes as text and mangles them. Yaps translates an SRT file and produces a translated version with its numbering and timing structure intact. Our [guide to translating SRT files](/blog/translate-srt-subtitles) covers the whole workflow including the reading-speed problems that translation introduces.

### Is it safe to translate confidential documents online?

Pasting confidential text into a web translator is a data transfer to a third party, whatever the privacy policy says. For client material, medical or legal documents, or anything under NDA, that is a decision worth making deliberately rather than by habit. Local translation avoids the question because there is no transfer.

### Does it cost anything per word?

No. Local translation has no per-character billing, no API key, and no metering. That changes behaviour in a practical way: you translate the whole document rather than only the paragraph you decided was worth paying for.

### What languages are supported?

Yaps supports a set of language pairs, each requiring a one-off pack download, and some pairs need an additional model before they become available. Because the list changes as packs are added, check the current options in the app for your specific pair rather than relying on a number in an article.

### Will translated text be longer than the original?

Often, yes. German and Spanish commonly run longer than English. This matters wherever space is fixed: buttons, table cells, and especially subtitles, where a longer line may not fit the time it is on screen. Budget for some manual trimming.

### What should I always check in a machine translation?

Proper nouns, which get translated when they should be left alone; numbers and decimal separators, since a comma becoming a full stop changes a figure enormously; formality, because many languages distinguish formal and informal address and the machine simply picks one; and length, wherever space is constrained.

### Can this replace a professional translator?

No, and it should not be presented as one. For anything being signed, published, or submitted officially, machine translation is a first draft and a qualified human translator does the work. Certified translation in particular is a formal process that no software output satisfies.

### Why does the first translation require a download?

Because the translation model itself has to live on your machine for the work to happen there. That is the same trade every offline tool makes: a one-off download in exchange for never needing a server afterwards. It is a fixed cost paid once per language pair rather than a running cost paid per character forever.
