## مقدمة

Yaps is on iPhone and iPad. It is [live on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/id6786817321) today.

It is a keyboard, not another app you have to remember to open. Switch to it with the globe key, tap the wave, and talk into whatever you were already using: Messages, Mail, Slack, Notes, a Google Doc, the search field of an app nobody has ever heard of. Clean punctuated text appears where the cursor was.

The part that matters more than the convenience: the speech recognition runs **on your phone**. Not in a data centre. The audio does not leave the device, so there is no server to trust, no retention policy to read, and no connection to lose.

## ما الذي تم شحنه بالفعل

Four things, and they are all local.

**A voice keyboard.** The core of it. Add Yaps as a keyboard, switch to it, and dictation is available inside every app on the phone. Speak naturally, including the false starts and the *ums*, and what lands is tidy text with punctuation and capitals already handled. That cleanup is the difference between raw transcription and something you can actually send.

**File transcription.** Import an audio or video file and get text back. A voice memo from a meeting, a lecture you recorded, a video you were sent. It runs on the phone, so a long file does not become an upload.

**Private notes.** Everything you dictate can land in a searchable local vault rather than scattered across other apps. Notes and history stay on the device.

**Read aloud.** Text to speech, also on device, for proofreading what you wrote or getting through something you would rather listen to.

Key Takeaway ¶

The iPhone app is not a companion to the desktop app. It is the whole workflow, running by itself, on a phone. If you never install Yaps on a computer it still does everything above.

## يستغرق إعداده حوالي ثلاث دقائق

Being straight about this: iOS makes third-party keyboards slightly awkward to install, and there is a one-time download. Both are worth knowing before you start.

Step 01

### Install and start the download 2 min

On first launch Yaps downloads the speech models it runs locally. It is a substantial download, so do it on Wi-Fi. This happens once, and afterwards the app works with no connection at all.

Step 02

### Add the keyboard 30 sec

Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard, then Yaps. Then tap Yaps again and turn on Allow Full Access.

Step 03

### Talk into any app 10 sec

Open anything with a text field, press the globe key to switch to Yaps, tap the audio wave, and speak. Allow the microphone prompt the first time.

**About Full Access.** iOS shows a scary warning when you enable it, and the warning is generic rather than specific to Yaps. Worth explaining plainly, because it is a fair thing to hesitate over.

Apple requires Full Access for any keyboard that needs to do work outside the tiny keyboard sandbox, which for Yaps means reaching the on-device speech models and your local notes. The warning exists because a keyboard *could* use that permission to send what you type somewhere. Yaps does not. Dictation, cleanup and read-aloud all run on the device, and no external service receives your keyboard text or your audio. The honest position is that you should not take any keyboard's word for that, ours included, which is exactly why the processing being local is the design rather than a promise.

## ما يكلف

You can use it without paying and without an account. Guest mode covers the keyboard, dictation, local notes, file transcription and read-aloud, with a usage allowance.

Paid plans on iPhone are bought through the App Store like any other app. There is a mobile plan covering the phone, and a plan that also covers the Mac and Windows apps and note sync between them. Both have weekly, annual, and one-off lifetime options, and Apple shows the exact price for your country on the paywall before you commit to anything.

> No account required is not a marketing line here. Guest mode exists because a keyboard that works on your device should not need to know who you are.

## الشيء هذا يكمل

Yaps now runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux. On the Mac that includes both Apple Silicon and Intel machines, which matters more than it sounds, because Intel support is the first thing most tools quietly drop.

We looked at eighteen other dictation and voice-typing tools to see whether that combination is actually unusual. It is. Not one of them covers all six.

The closest is Wispr Flow, which has Mac, Windows, iPhone and an Android beta, but no Linux at all. Willow Voice and Aqua Voice reach Mac, Windows and iPhone but have no Android. Talon is the only serious tool with genuine Linux support, and it has no mobile apps whatsoever. Several tools that market themselves as "everywhere" turn out to mean a web page, which is not the same thing as an app that types into your other apps.

Scroll

| Platform | Yaps | Wispr Flow | Willow Voice | Talon |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| iPhone | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| iPad | Yes | Unconfirmed | Yes | No |
| Android | Yes | Beta | No | No |
| macOS Apple Silicon | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| macOS Intel | Yes | Yes | Unconfirmed | Yes |
| Windows | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Linux | Yes | No | No | Partial |

Being fair about that table: "unconfirmed" means we could not verify it from the vendor's own materials, not that it does not work. Vendors often say "iOS" without saying whether the iPad build is native, and often say "macOS" without saying whether Intel still works.

The reason this matters is not bragging rights. It is that most people do not live on one device. You dictate a thought on the phone on the way somewhere and finish it on a laptop that runs a different operating system from the phone. If your dictation tool covers only part of that, you end up with two habits instead of one.

## ما لم تفعله بعد

Every launch post should have this section, so here is ours.

On iPhone and iPad today

05

- Voice typing in any app through the keyboard, with cleanup applied as you speak.
- Offline once set up no connection needed after the first download.
- Transcribing your own files audio or video, imported and processed on the device.
- Local notes and history searchable, private, stored on the phone.
- Optional sync to desktop off unless you turn it on and pair the devices.

Still desktop only

04

- Speaker identification labelling who said what in a recording is Mac and Windows only.
- The full read-aloud voice set desktop carries far more voices and languages than mobile.
- Audio export of read-aloud turning a document into a file you keep is a desktop job.
- Voice commands driving the computer by voice is a desktop feature.

There is also no Apple Watch app. If dictating from your wrist is the thing you need, we are not the answer today.

## لماذا لوحة المفاتيح بدلاً من التطبيق

iOS already has dictation built in, and it is genuinely decent for a sentence. The reason to add another keyboard comes down to three things people keep telling us.

**It stops when you pause.** Built-in dictation is tuned for short bursts. Think mid-sentence for a few seconds and it decides you are finished. Yaps is built for talking at length, so a pause is just a pause.

**Raw speech is not writing.** Dictation that faithfully transcribes every *um*, every restart, and no punctuation hands you a cleanup job. The on-device cleanup is doing the unglamorous work that makes the output sendable.

**Where the audio goes.** Apple's dictation is on-device for some languages on some hardware, and falls back to Apple's servers otherwise, which is not something most people check. With Yaps the answer does not depend on the language you picked or how new your phone is.

## الأسئلة المتداولة

### Is the Yaps iPhone app available now?

Yes. Yaps is live on the App Store as "Yaps: AI Voice Typing Keyboard", and it runs on both iPhone and iPad. It was previously listed as coming soon while it went through App Review, and that is no longer the case.

### Does Yaps work on iPad?

Yes. The same app covers iPhone and iPad, including the keyboard, dictation, file transcription, local notes and read-aloud. If you write on an iPad with an external keyboard, the voice keyboard still works the same way through the on-screen keyboard switcher.

### Does the iPhone app work offline?

Yes, once the first-run download finishes. Yaps downloads its speech models when you install it, which needs a connection and is best done on Wi-Fi. After that, dictation, cleanup and read-aloud all run on the device with no connection at all, including on a plane or underground.

### Does my voice get uploaded anywhere?

No. Speech recognition, text cleanup and read-aloud all run on the phone. No external service receives your dictation audio or your keyboard text. Note sync between your phone and your computer is optional and off unless you turn it on and pair the devices yourself.

### Why does Yaps need Full Access on iOS?

Apple requires Full Access for any keyboard that needs to work outside the restricted keyboard sandbox, which for Yaps means using the on-device speech models and reaching your local notes. The warning iOS shows is generic to all keyboards rather than specific to Yaps. Because the processing happens locally, granting it does not send your typing anywhere.

### Is it free?

There is a free guest mode that needs no account at all, covering the keyboard, dictation, local notes, file transcription and read-aloud with a usage allowance. Paid plans are bought through the App Store, with a mobile plan and a plan that also covers the Mac and Windows apps, each available weekly, annually, or as a one-off lifetime purchase. Apple shows the price for your country before you buy.

### How is this different from the dictation already built into iPhone?

Three practical differences. Yaps does not cut off when you pause, so it suits talking at length rather than single sentences. It cleans up filler words and adds punctuation, so the output is closer to something you can send. And its speech recognition always runs on the device, whereas Apple's is on-device only for certain languages and hardware and otherwise falls back to Apple's servers.

### Can it transcribe a recording I already have?

Yes. Import an audio or video file and Yaps transcribes it on the phone. Speaker identification, which labels who said what, is currently a Mac and Windows feature rather than a mobile one.

### Does it sync with the Mac or Windows app?

Yes, optionally. Note sync between mobile and desktop works and is off by default. You pair the devices deliberately, and it is a direct connection rather than a cloud account holding your notes.

### What languages does it handle?

Dictation covers roughly 25 languages and detects which one you are speaking rather than making you pick from a menu. Read-aloud on mobile ships a smaller voice and language set than the desktop app, which is the main feature gap between the two.

### Which devices and iOS versions does it support?

It runs on iPhone and iPad. Yaps was tested for App Review on a physical iPhone 13 running the current public iOS release, with the 13-inch iPad Pro layout verified as well. Because the speech models run locally, a newer device will transcribe faster than an older one.

### Does Yaps replace my normal keyboard?

Only when you want it to. iOS lets you keep every keyboard you already use and switch between them with the globe key, so Yaps sits alongside the standard keyboard rather than replacing it. Many people switch to Yaps to talk, then switch back to type.

### What is still missing on iOS?

Speaker identification, the full read-aloud voice and language set, exporting read-aloud as an audio file, and voice commands are all desktop features today. There is also no Apple Watch app. Everything else in this post works on the phone.

### Is Yaps on more platforms than other dictation apps?

Yes, on current evidence. Yaps runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS (both Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux. Of eighteen dictation and voice-typing tools we checked, none covered all six. The nearest, Wispr Flow, has no Linux app, and Talon, the only one with real Linux support, has no mobile apps.
